Congratulations to Amy Mexquititla Perez, who has been named Step Up’s 2019 Outstanding Alum of the Year for her leadership and her passion for serving young people and her community.

Now a freshman at Macalester College, Amy completed four Step Up internships at the City of Minneapolis Department of Human rights, the Minnesota Department of Human Services, Thrivent Financial and Community Bridge. She also shared her expertise and wisdom on the Step Up Intern Advisory Committee, which provides a youth voice to strengthen Step Up programming and outreach.

Amy is also a leader in the Minneapolis Youth Congress (MYC), where she works to create more equitable opportunities for young people in our city. She was very active in MYC’s campaign to increase the minimum age to purchase tobacco products to 21, which was passed by the Minneapolis City Council in 2018.

Amy graduated from Washburn High School in 2018 and is a recipient of the prestigious Page and Wallin scholarships. Step Up is very proud to recognize this talented young leader who cares so deeply about the world around her.
