Maliza Kalema (she/her/hers) is a proud North High School graduate. She earned her BA in political science from Howard University and did her teaching residency through the Urban Teacher's Program at Johns Hopkins School of Education.
After years in the classroom as a math special education teacher she left the classrooms of DC Prep Academy Charter network to serve on the PrepNext college access team as an alumni support counselor. Maliza is passionate about service and has completed two full-time AmeriCorp terms of domestic service all focused on creating more equitable outcomes is education. She went on to manage Higher Education Readiness Opportunity programming at The College Success Foundation in D.C.
After years in the DMV, Maliza moved back home to Minnesota in 2018 and has leveraged her years of experience to continue to serve in capacities focused on education, juvenile justice, child welfare, and youth and family engagement. Maliza's passion is fueled through an ethos of persistence towards better outcomes and increased access. She's found a full-circle home at AchieveMpls and continues to be a servant leader in many spaces throughout the Twin Cities. In her spare time, she loves trying new recipes, sewing, reading and spending time with family and friends.
