The PALA program was implemented in all K-5, K-8 and middle schools during the 2007–08 school year, running from February 4-March 14. Approximately 15,000 students were involved in the program from 2nd grade through 8th grade students. Each student recieved a PALA printed logbook, an "I'm a Champion" wristband, a lettered pencil, reward stickers and sports erasers. All students who met their goal of 60 minutes of exercise, 5 days per week, were awarded an engraved gold medal on a red, white and blue neckband. They also received a PALA badge and certificate. Each school's Physical Education department received $400.00 to buy equipment for their PE programs. In many buildings, this is the only money they have to buy new equipment.
The 2008 kick off assembly was held at Nellie Stone Johnson in early February and later assemblies took place at 45 different Minneapolis Public Schools. These assemblies featured athletes from the University of Minnesota and various high schools, as well as from General Mills and AchieveMpls.
Approximately 5,700 students met their goal and received the PALA awards in march.
