STEP-UP Achieve intern at Regions Hospital

STEP-UP Achieve intern May and Regions employees

It takes a special 17 year-old to feel confident enough to remind nurses to wash their hands.  May is just that person.  A senior at Roosevelt High School, she spent last summer working at Regions Hospital with nurse manager Lek Kremer.

Lek Kremer works with over 100 nurses and can certainly use extra help in the summer.  “May is absolutely wonderful and very self-directed,” she says. “She’s the best intern we’ve ever had.  The most important skill in this internship role is to not be scared of doing new things and talking to patients.  That will really open your work up.”  May is certainly not afraid to jump in.  She helps answer call lights, visits with patients and does hand-washing audits for medical staff. “If they miss an opportunity to wash their hands, I let them know and give them feedback!” says May.

May wants to be a pediatrician someday.  She enjoyed her summer job and took full advantage of her internship with Regions Hospital by shadowing other staff and getting to know many of the nurses and doctors.  “I was amazed at how they supported me.  It’s not just my floor – everyone greets me and asks if they can help.”
