Support for Career & College Readiness
The Community Engagement team helps ensure that all MPS students are career and college-ready through our work with the AchieveMpls Career & College Centers. We recruit, train and support community members to effectively volunteer with students in a wide variety of activities, including:
Real-Life Connections: In these hour-long presentations, community members speak to students about their personal and professional paths to their current careers. Students are exposed to new career possibilities, learn the necessary requirements for a given career and are motivated by seeing examples of others like themselves who are successful professionals. We are always looking for more RLC speakers!
Workshops: Community members with a specific skill set or interest are invited to present one-time or ongoing workshops to students at MPS high schools. Past workshops have focused on topics such as financial literacy, resume writing, interviewing skills, stress management, communication and theatrical audition practice. We invite all community members to present a workshop on a subject of their choice.
Career Fairs: Held at each MPS high school in the spring, these half-day events give students the chance to learn about different careers directly from individuals involved in various professions and areas of work. Representatives from many sectors are invited to staff a table or visit classrooms and speak to students about their jobs.
Career and College Center Student Leaders (3CSL): This program works with students in each MPS high school to develop their leadership potential and to empower them to share their knowledge and skills with others. Students meet in high school chapters as well as at a city-wide level. We are currently looking for energetic and motivated young professionals and college students to advise 3CSL chapters.
Graduation Coaches: In this new program, young professionals and college students will work one-on-one with a student to help him/her navigate the process of preparing for college and a career. We are currently looking for interested Graduation Coaches to participate in our pilot program. MPS alumni are encouraged to apply, but all are welcome!
Parent Coaches: This new program will join community members with one or two families whose students are nearing graduation. Coaches will work with parents and care givers to help them support their student in applying to college, obtaining financial aid and in ensuring that their students are fully prepared for the transition to college life.
College and Career Center Support: The Community Engagement team recruits interested community volunteers to help CCC coordinators with administrative tasks and assist students in researching colleges and careers.
